Tenable Virtual Appliance

Tenable is pleased to announce the release of the Tenable Virtual Appliance! The appliance replaces the Nessus VM Appliance and provides a preinstalled image of all Tenable applications in one easy to configure interface. The Tenable Virtual Appliance is available for Tenable customers and is provided for use with VMware Server, VMware Player and VMware ESX Server. Currently, Nessus and Security Center applications are available on the appliance with the Log Correlation Engine and Passive Vulnerability Scanner to be released soon. Tenable ProfessionalFeed customers can download the latest version of the Tenable Virtual Appliance along with any available updates from the Tenable Support Portal.

Current information about Tenable appliances is available at:

How does it work?

It is very simple to launch and configure the Tenable Virtual Appliance. Obtain the appropriate .zip file for the VM application you are using (along with any available updates that are provided on the Tenable Support Portal), decompress the files and launch the VM image. Once the boot process is completed, a console screen will be displayed as follows:

Appliance_console

The console screen enables you to display information about the appliance, configure a static IP address, shutdown or restart it. All other functions are performed through the web browser interface, which is accessed by loading a web browser and entering the URL displayed under “Appliance Information”.

Once you successfully login to the appliance, the main page is displayed providing management functions as follows:

The main page of the Tenable Virtual Appliance displays the following navigation tabs:

  • Appliance
  • Administration
  • Networking
  • Applications
  • Logs
  • Support

Appliance configuration options are set through the “Networking” and “Administration” pages. Application configuration options for the specific Tenable applications (currently Security Center and Nessus) are available through the “Applications” page. The “Appliance”, “Logs” and “Support” options are used to obtain more information about the appliance and its underlying applications. The “Applications” page shows the available Tenable products that may be activated if you have obtained a license from Tenable (Note that LCS and PVS are currently placeholders and will be available in the near future):

Applications

The Tenable applications come pre-installed on the appliance and only require a valid license or activation code to be configured and used. At present, only the Security Center and Nessus are included, but future versions will include LCE and PVS. Although all the applications will be installed on the appliance, the user has the option to only activate the desired application. This facilitates maintenance since only one VM image is required for all the applications.
